How to Find an IRS Office Near You

Most of the time, you may be able to resolve tax issues you run into by calling the IRS or using an online tool. If you need help with basic services, such as tracking a refund or accessing tax records, the IRS website is a good place to start.

If your problem is a bit more complicated and you want to speak to someone over the phone, the IRS has a main phone number as well as numbers for specific tax situations you can call for assistance.

But if these resources aren’t cutting it, you may want to talk to someone face to face. Here’s how to find and make an appointment at your local IRS office or a tax office near you.

How do I find a local IRS office near me?

The IRS offers in-person help through Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs). Click the button below to go directly to the IRS office locator page.

You can search for an IRS office by entering your address or by selecting your state. The tool will then populate the nearest tax offices and provide you with their hours of operation, addresses, phone numbers and directions from your location.

Do I need an appointment to get help at an IRS office?

IRS offices are normally only open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You’ll need to call and make an appointment to get in-person help, as they don’t typically accept walk-ins. That number is 844-545-5640.

What kind of help can I get at my local IRS office?

Local IRS offices do not offer tax preparation services, nor will they help you to file your return. Typically, they can assist with things like basic tax inquiries, payment processing, finding tax forms and identity theft assistance. The IRS TAC locator will list the available services of each local office.

If you need help filling out your return, consider reviewing your eligibility for IRS-affiliated or -run tax services, such as Free File, Direct File, VITA or the TCE program.

How to prepare for your IRS appointment

After making your appointment with a TAC, there are a few things you’ll want to have handy to ensure you get the help you need. These items are:

  • A government ID, like a driver’s license or birth certificate.

  • Your Social Security number or other tax ID.

  • Any tax documents related to your visit.

Taxpayer Advocate Service offices

The Taxpayer Advocate Service — not to be confused with the IRS-run Taxpayer Assistance Centers described above — is an independent organization separate from the IRS. You may consider visiting a Taxpayer Advocate Service office if you’re struggling with a tax issue and can’t find a solution on your own. These centers aim to help taxpayers know their rights and help resolve issues between taxpayers and the IRS.

Every state has at least one local Taxpayer Advocate Service office that reports to the National Taxpayer Advocate. You can visit the IRS local taxpayer advocate page to find the address and phone number of the location nearest to you.

Other ways to find help at a tax office

If you want in-person help filing your taxes, you may be able to visit the physical office of an H&R Block or other tax company to get the assistance you’re looking for. You can also visit the IRS’ online directory to find a CPA or tax preparer near you whom you can meet with in person.

Some tax preparers accept walk-ins, but in most cases, you’ll want to schedule an appointment online. Make sure to ask about pricing beforehand, as the cost of hiring an in-person tax pro can vary based on the complexity of your return.

🤓Nerdy Tip

If you meet certain qualifications, you may be eligible for free tax filing services through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. To find a VITA or TCE location near you, visit the IRS free tax help page or call 800-906-9887.
